Butylated Hydroxyanisole (BHA) is a synthetic, fat-soluble phenolic antioxidant widely used as a food additive (E320). It is a white to pale yellow, waxy solid or crystalline powder composed of a mixture of 2-tert-butyl-4-hydroxyanisole and 3-tert-butyl-4-hydroxyanisole. As a multifunctional antioxidant, BHA is primarily used to prevent oxidative rancidity in fats, oils, and fat-containing foods, thereby preserving flavor, color, and nutritional value. It is also employed as a dough strengthener and flavor enhancer.
